Method Pilates Vs Fitness Pilates

The Pilates method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 20th Century. Pilates method teachers adhere to the principles he set out and follow the exercise repertoire he established, tailoring exercise choices and variations to their clients.

Pilates fitness classes are those in which Pilates exercises, principles and sometimes equipment like the reformer, have been introduced by other exercise teachers into their workouts and classes.

The Society for the Pilates Method was established in 2020 by the UK’s leading Pilates training schools to differentiate their teachers from the mass of those now offering ‘Pilates’. They say:

  • A deep commitment to the original Method, rather than delivering modified fitness classes.
