Vitamin D helps your body absorb and use calcium which helps keep your bones and muscles strong. You can get vitamin D from sunlight, diet and supplements.
In the spring and summer, most people get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight on their bare skin. In the autumn and winter the government recommends you consider taking a daily supplement as it’s difficult to get all you need from diet alone.
The suggestion for most people is a daily tablet of 10 micrograms. This is often shown as 400 IU on the packets you can buy from chemists and supermarkets.
Some people, such as those with osteoporosis, may need to take supplements all year round or a higher dose. The maximum recommended daily dose is 100 micrograms (4000 IU).
