Exercises to help with getting out of the bath

As we get older, getting out of the bath can become difficult. If you don’t want to switch to showers or aren’t ready to splash out on a ‘bath lift’ device, exercise can help. The aim is to maintain your strength, mobility and balance. The exercises we do in class share these aims. The exercises below are aimed specifically at the movements you need to get out of the bath more easily.

  • Split sit and stand – sit sideways on a chair with one leg forward and one to the side and stand up
  • Wall push-up – stand with your hands against the wall and bend your elbows moving your whole body towards the wall in one piece like a plank
  • Hip stretch – sit on a chair and cross one ankle over the other knee
  • Step over – place an upturned bucket (or similar) on the floor and step over it sideways to and fro

Do up to 3 sets of 6-10 rep’s. Hold stretches for 30 seconds.
