What to Wear for Pilates

I suggest you wear fitted clothing that is comfortable for you to move in and socks, but no shoes. Gentlemen should wear fitted underwear and shorts or long sweatpants.

Getting Started

If you are trying Pilates for the first time, there’s no need to shop. Any elasticated bottoms with a T-shirt or sweatshirt on top are fine. Avoid jeans and other clothes made from stiff fabrics like denim which are hard to move in. Also avoid zips, buttons, belts, jewellery and other accessories which might dig into you and be uncomfortable while you lie on your mat. When using the large equipment, there’s also a risk accessories and loose clothing could get caught in the springs.

Pilates Wear

Sportswear suitable for Pilates is widely available in a range of fabrics and prices. Fitted clothes in soft, stretchy fabrics work well as they don’t ride up and show off more than you’d like! Fitted clothes can help your instructor see how your body is moving more easily. When trying on leggings, try squatting in them to check you can move comfortably and they don’t become see-through when stretched. You might choose breathable fabrics with moisture wicking properties for summer months.

Pilates socks with grippy pads on the soles are helpful to stop your feet slipping on the floor.

Sports bras usually have softer, thicker straps and a yoga or low impact bra is a better choice than an underwired bra or one with hooks which can dig in.

Tying long hair out of the way avoids it falling in your face and getting caught in the large equipment, but note ponytails and hair clips fastened at the back of your head are uncomfortable to lie on.
