Kyphosis describes any rounding of the upper back. Dowager’s hump is a common, if outdated, term for this rounding when applied to older women. Tech neck is the modern equivalent for this poor posture when caused by looking down at electronic devices.
Some degree or rounding is normal but a curve of more than 45 degrees is considered excessive. No intervention is needed unless the curve causes persistent pain, is getting worse over time, or leads to breathing difficulties due to compression of lungs and airways.
Postural kyphosis can be avoided by being aware of your posture and taking care of your back:
- sit upright and avoid slouching
- invest in a good desk chair
- hold your phone at a more upright angle
- use a stand to raise your laptop or computer monitor to eye level
- avoid prolonged periods staring down at your tech
- avoid carrying heavy bags, use a backpack instead
- Eat well and stay a healthy weight
- take regular exercise such as swimming, running, walking, yoga or Pilates
If your excessive kyphosis is cause by osteoporosis, then let your fitness instructor know as you may have to modify some of the exercises you do.
