Joseph Pilates believed in the benefits of being outdoors. He said:
By all means never fail to get all the sunshine and fresh air you can.
He was right! During the summer months, having sunlight on your skins generates vitamin D, which helps regulate the calcium and phosphate needed to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
Too little vitamin D can lead to bone deficiencies in children (rickets) and bone pain adults (osteomalacia).
Since it’s difficult to get all the vitamin D that you need in your diet, the UK government advises everyone to consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the colder months. For adults, the recommended dose is 400 IU (10 micrograms) and should not exceed 4000 IU (100 micrograms).
