Anyone in the UK can call themselves a Pilates teacher as there are currently no legal requirements about qualifications. There is a national level 3 qualification for matwork but nothing for studio.
To find a teacher ask around, look in the local press or search online. Here’s a list of some of the major Pilates training organisations most of which have a find a class/instructor/studio service on their websites:
- Body Control Pilates – the UK based organisation that I trained with
- Pilates Foundation
- Polestar Pilates
- Stott Pilates
- The Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI)
- Body Arts and Science International (BASI)
Once you have found an instructor, don’t be afraid to ask them what their training and teaching experience is. Ideally a matwork class should have a maximum of 12 and studios should offer private sessions. Be prepared to describe your own experience and any medical problems. If you’ve been doing Pilates for several years to help with a chronic back problem, you probably don’t want someone who has only just qualified to teach matwork.
